Spontaneity at constant T and P is governed by the sign of the Gibbs free energy change: ΔG < 0 means spontaneous, ΔG > 0 means non-spontaneous, and ΔG = 0 means the system is at equilibrium.

The Gibbs free energy change combines both the enthalpy change (ΔH) and the entropy change (ΔS) of a process at a given temperature T:

ΔG = ΔH - TΔS

The conditions for spontaneity, based on the signs of ΔH and ΔS, are:

  • If ΔH is negative (exothermic) and ΔS is positive (increase in disorder): ΔG is always negative — spontaneous at all temperatures.
  • If ΔH is positive (endothermic) and ΔS is negative (decrease in disorder): ΔG is always positive — non-spontaneous at all temperatures.
  • If ΔH is negative and ΔS is negative: spontaneous only at low temperatures, where the TΔS term is small. …
