Step 1. Let ABCDABCD be the parallelogram with side AB⃗=a⃗\vec{AB}=\vec a and diagonal AC⃗=b⃗\vec{AC}=\vec b.

Step 2. Since AC⃗=AB⃗+BC⃗\vec{AC}=\vec{AB}+\vec{BC}, we get BC⃗=AC⃗−AB⃗=b⃗−a⃗\vec{BC}=\vec{AC}-\vec{AB}=\vec b-\vec a. This is the other side (adjacent to ABAB at BB).

Step 3. In a parallelogram, opposite sides are equal vectors (in the sense DC⃗=AB⃗=a⃗\vec{DC}=\vec{AB}=\vec a and AD⃗=BC⃗=b⃗−a⃗\vec{AD}=\vec{BC}=\vec b-\vec a), so all four sides are accounted for by a⃗\vec a and b⃗−a⃗\vec b-\vec a. …
