Scalar Multiplication of a Vector

Scalar Multiplication of a Vector

Definition. For a vector a⃗\vec a and a scalar (real number) mm, the vector ma⃗m\vec a is called the scalar multiple of a⃗\vec a by mm.

Effect on magnitude and direction.

  • If m=0m=0, then ma⃗=0⃗m\vec a=\vec 0 (the zero vector) regardless of a⃗\vec a.
  • If m>0m>0, then ma⃗m\vec a points in the same direction as a⃗\vec a; if m<0m<0, it points in the opposite direction. So a⃗\vec a and ma⃗m\vec a are like vectors when m>0m>0 and unlike vectors when m<0m<0.
  • The magnitude scales exactly as expected: ∣ma⃗∣=∣m∣ ∣a⃗∣.|m\vec a|=|m|\,|\vec a|. …
