Definition and Rules of Significant Figures
The significant figures (or significant digits) of a measured value are the digits known reliably, plus exactly one more digit that is uncertain. For instance, the gravitational constant is quoted as N m kg: the digits and are reliable, while the final is the one uncertain digit -- so the value has three significant figures.
Table 1.9 sets out the counting rules: every non-zero digit counts; a zero between two non-zero digits counts; a trailing zero to the left of a decimal point counts; a trailing zero with no decimal point does not count unless it is known to come from an actual measurement; a leading zero (before the first non-zero digit, in a number less than 1) never counts; a trailing zero after a decimal point (and after a non-zero digit) always counts; and -- crucially -- the count is completely independent of which unit or which power-of-ten prefix is used to express the number (e.g. cm, m, and km are the same physical length, all with three significant figures). An exact counting number (like the '2' in ) is not a measured quantity at all, so it is treated as having infinitely many significant …
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| i) All non-zero digits are significant | 1342 has four significant figures |
| ii) All zeros between two non-zero digits are significant | 2008 has four significant figures |
| iii) All zeros to the right of a non-zero digit but to the left of a decimal point are significant | 30700. has five significant figures |
| iv) a) Without a decimal point, trailing zero(s) are not significant; b) all zeros are significant if they come from a measurement | a) 30700 has three significant figures; b) 30700 m has five significant figures |
| v) For a number less than 1, zero(s) to the right of the decimal point but to the left of the first non-zero digit are not significant | 0.00345 has three significant figures |
| vi) All zeros to the right of a decimal point and to the right of a non-zero digit are significant | 40.00 has four significant figures and 0.030400 has five significant figures |
| vii) The number of significant figures does not depend on the system of units used | 1.53 cm, 0.0153 m, 0.0000153 km all have three significant figures |
