End correction (e ~ 0.6r) accounts for the antinode forming slightly beyond the open end of a resonance tube, and must be added to the measured air-column length for accurate results.

In the resonance air column experiment, a vibrating tuning fork is held over the open end of a tube (closed at the other end, with water level adjustable) to find the lengths at which resonance (loud sound) occurs.

Ideal theory assumes a displacement antinode forms exactly at the open end of the tube. In reality, due to the finite size (radius) of the tube, the air just outside the open end also vibrates a little, so the true antinode forms a small distance ABOVE (outside) the open end, not exactly at the rim.

This extra distance is called the end correction, e, and (from Reynold's formula) is approximately:

e ~ 0.6 r

where r is the internal radius of the tube.
