Step 1. Identify what heart sounds are. During each cardiac cycle, the heart produces two sounds that can be heard through a stethoscope, and both are of real clinical diagnostic significance because an abnormal sound often signals a valve problem.

Step 2. Explain the first sound ('lub'). As the ventricles begin to contract (ventricular systole), rising ventricular pressure snaps the tricuspid and bicuspid (mitral) valves shut to stop blood being pushed backward into the atria; this sudden valve closure produces the first sound, 'lub'.

Step 3. Explain the second sound ('dub'). Once ventricular ejection finishes and the ventricles begin to relax, arterial pressure exceeds the now-falling ventricular pressure, snapping the semilunar (pulmonary and aortic) valves shut to stop blood flowing backward from the arteries into the ventricles; this closure produces the second sound, 'dub'. …
