A working vermibed is a small ecosystem, and like any livestock operation it can be attacked by predators, pests and parasites — almost always because bed management (moisture, cover, protection) has slipped. Outside enemies that prey directly on earthworms include ants, springtails, centipedes, slugs, mites, certain beetle larvae, and larger animals such as birds, rats, snakes, mice and toads. The worms also carry internal parasites, including several kinds of protozoa, some nematodes, and the larvae of certain flies.
