Four commonly used voucher types, and the transactions each records, are:
- Payment Voucher — used to record any payment made by the business, by cash or bank (e.g. paying rent, paying a supplier).
- Receipt Voucher — used to record any amount received by the business, by cash or bank (e.g. receiving payment from a customer, receiving a loan).
- Contra Voucher — used specifically for a transaction that moves funds between the firm's OWN cash and bank accounts (e.g. depositing cash into the bank, or withdrawing cash from the bank), since neither side of this entry involves an external party.
- Sales Voucher — used to record a sale of goods or services, whether the sale is for cash or on credit.
(Other valid voucher types include the Purchase Voucher, recording a purchase of goods or services; the Journal Voucher, recording non-cash adjustment entries such as depreciation; and Debit Note/Credit Note, recording purchase returns and sales returns respectively.) …
