Trend Analysis is valued for several distinct reasons:

  1. Reveals the genuine long-term direction — by using several years of data against a single fixed base, it shows whether a figure is following a sustained, consistent pattern of change, rather than being judged from just one or two years, which could happen to include an unusually good or bad period.
  2. Assists forecasting and budgeting — a consistent trend percentage pattern (e.g. steady growth of about 25 percentage points a year, as in Question 8) gives management and analysts a reasonable, data-based starting point for projecting near-future performance.
  3. Enables comparison between firms of different sizes — since every firm's own figures are expressed relative to its own base year, the resulting trend percentages can be compared meaningfully between a large firm and a small one, something raw rupee figures cannot do.
  4. Helps distinguish a genuine trend from a one-off event — if a figure spikes sharply in just one year but the surrounding years show a much flatter trend line, this is a signal to investigate that one year rather than assume the spike represents a new, ongoing direction. …
