(i) Finding E(X+Y)E(X+Y):

Using the property E(X+Y)=E(X)+E(Y)E(X+Y) = E(X)+E(Y):

E(X+Y)=8+5=13E(X+Y) = 8+5 = 13

(ii) Finding E(2X−3Y+7)E(2X-3Y+7):

Using the general linear property E(aX+bY+c)=aE(X)+bE(Y)+cE(aX+bY+c) = aE(X)+bE(Y)+c with a=2a=2, b=−3b=-3, c=7c=7:

E(2X−3Y+7)=2E(X)−3E(Y)+7=2(8)−3(5)+7E(2X-3Y+7) = 2E(X) - 3E(Y) + 7 = 2(8) - 3(5) + 7
