Propensity to consume (the consumption function) is the relationship between income and consumption spending, C = f(Y).

The propensity to consume, also called the consumption function, shows the functional relationship between total income and total consumption expenditure in an economy:

C = f(Y)

where C is consumption and Y is income. It tells us how consumption changes as income changes. It has two measures:

  • Average Propensity to Consume (APC) = C / Y — the proportion of total income spent on consumption.
