(a) Money serves primary (medium of exchange, measure of value), secondary (deferred payments, store of value, transfer of value) and contingent functions. (b) Internal trade is within one country (one currency, free mobility); international trade is between countries (different currencies, barriers, exchange rates, BoP).

(a) Functions of Money:

Primary (main) functions:

  1. Medium of exchange: money is generally accepted in exchange for goods and services, removing the double-coincidence-of-wants problem of barter.
  2. Measure of value: money acts as a common unit in which the value of all goods and services is expressed and compared.

Secondary (derivative) functions:

3. Standard of deferred payments: debts and future payments are stated and settled in money.

4. Store of value: money can be saved and held to be used later, preserving purchasing power.

5. Transfer of value: money allows value to be transferred easily from one person or place to another.

Contingent functions:

6. Basis of the credit system, equitable distribution of income, measurement of liquidity and the productivity of capital.
