Adaptive Physical Education is not a separate subject or a watered-down version of regular PE. It is a philosophy and a method of teaching physical activity that begins with the student’s ability, not their disability. In a regular PE class, the activity is fixed and the student must fit into it. In APE, the student is fixed and the activity is adapted — the rules, equipment, space, time, or instruction style are changed so that every student can participate meaningfully and safely.
The core idea is inclusion through modification. A student in a wheelchair cannot play standard basketball, but they can play wheelchair basketball with modified rules (no double-dribble, a lower basket). A student with a visual impairment cannot catch a standard ball, but they can catch a ball with a bell inside. A student with an intellectual disability may not follow complex team strategies, but they can succeed in a simplified game with clear, repetitive instructions. APE makes these adjustments systematically.
Adaptive Physical Education is not therapy (like physiotherapy or occupational therapy), though it has therapeutic benefits. It is a physical education programme delivered by a qualified PE teacher, with educational goals in the domains of psychomotor, cognitive, and affective development.
