Gold is one of the most expensive and precious of all metals. It has been used for coinage, and has served as a standard for the monetary systems of some countries. Gold is used extensively in jewellery, generally in its ALLOY form with copper (pure gold being too soft on its own for durable jewellery). It is also used in ELECTROPLATING -- depositing a thin surface layer of gold onto other metals -- for applications such as watches, artificial limb joints, cheap/costume jewellery, dental fillings and electrical connectors, where only a thin gold surface (rather than solid gold) is needed.
