Step 1. Zone refining is based on the principle of fractional crystallisation -- specifically, that impurities are MORE SOLUBLE in the molten (liquid) form of a metal than in its solid, crystalline form.

Step 2. The impure metal is cast as a rod. A mobile induction heater melts a small zone at one end of the rod, then is moved slowly along the rod's length towards the other end.

Step 3. As the heater advances, the metal just behind it (which the heater has already passed over) cools and RE-CRYSTALLISES in a purer form, because impurities are rejected from the newly forming solid and instead pass into the adjacent still-molten zone travelling along with the heater.

Step 4. As the molten zone moves progressively along the rod (carrying impurities with it), repeating this heater pass several times, always in the same direction, concentrates the impurities at one end of the rod (which is cut off and discarded), leaving the bulk of the rod at very high purity.
