Superconductors, having zero electrical resistance below their critical temperature, find major applications wherever very strong magnetic fields, extremely sensitive field detection, or loss-free current carrying are needed.

Since superconductors carry electric current without any resistive energy loss and can sustain very large current densities, they have several important applications:

  1. Powerful electromagnets: Superconducting coils can generate extremely strong, stable magnetic fields without the huge heat losses that ordinary resistive electromagnets would suffer. This is used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners in hospitals, in magnetically levitated (maglev) trains, and in the huge bending/focusing magnets of particle accelerators.
  2. Highly sensitive magnetic-field detectors (SQUIDs): Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) exploit superconducting behaviour to detect extremely weak magnetic fields, used in sensitive scientific instruments and in medical devices for measuring the tiny magnetic fields produced by the brain/heart. …
