Step 1. Write the atom-balance equations. Let a,b,c,da,b,c,d be the coefficients of C2H6, O2, H2O, CO2C_2H_6,\ O_2,\ H_2O,\ CO_2 respectively:

  • Carbon: 2a=d2a=d
  • Hydrogen: 6a=2c6a=2c
  • Oxygen: 2b=c+2d2b=c+2d

Rearranged into standard linear-system form:

2a−d=0,6a−2c=0,2b−c−2d=0.2a-d=0,\qquad 6a-2c=0,\qquad 2b-c-2d=0.

Step 2. Solve by Gaussian elimination (eliminate c,dc,d in terms of aa). From the carbon equation, d=2ad=2a. From the hydrogen equation, c=3ac=3a. Substituting both into the oxygen equation:

2b=c+2d=3a+2(2a)=3a+4a=7a ⟹ b=7a2.2b=c+2d=3a+2(2a)=3a+4a=7a\ \Longrightarrow\ b=\frac{7a}{2}.

Step 3. Choose the smallest aa that clears all fractions. Since b=7a2b=\dfrac{7a}2, taking a=2a=2 makes every coefficient a whole number: a=2, b=7, c=3(2)=6, d=2(2)=4a=2,\ b=7,\ c=3(2)=6,\ d=2(2)=4. …
