This closing activity box, titled 'Dual nature of radiation and matter', points students to the PhET Interactive Simulations website's legacy Photoelectric Effect simulation, an interactive, browser-based visualisation designed to make the whole of section 7.2's experimental study directly explorable by hand rather than only read about. Working through the simulation, students can watch light striking a metal target and knocking electrons off it in real time, and can freely change the intensity of the light, its wavelength, the applied battery voltage, and even the target's material, observing immediately how each change affects both the resulting photoelectric current and the energy of the emitted electrons. The simulation also lets students plot and inspect the resulting photocurrent-versus-voltage and photocurrent-versus-intensity graphs directly, letting them rediscover, through their own hands-on experimentation, the very same experimental laws of the photoelectric effect that section 7.2 built up analytically -- that intensity controls the number of photoelectrons bu …
Worked out. Students are guided to open a browser and load the PhET Photoelectric Effect (legacy) simulation, then work through a sequence of guided steps: change the intensity of the incident light and observe how it affects both the photoelectric current and the emitted electrons' energy; adjust the wavelength of the light and observe how that, in turn, affects the current and the electron energy; adjust the applied battery voltage and analyse how the potential difference changes the photoelectric current; swap the target material and observe how that changes the current and electron energy; and finally study the resulting photocurrent-versus-voltage and photocurrent-versus-intensity graphs the simulation produces. The activity is designed to let students rediscover, by direct manipulation, the very same experimental laws of the photoelectric effect -- intensity controls current but not electron energy, frequency co …
