Maxwell (1864) proved that light is an electromagnetic wave, transverse in nature, carrying electromagnetic energy, and -- crucially -- requiring no medium at all for its propagation. Every classical phenomenon of light, including polarisation (which the earlier longitudinal wave theory could not explain), was successfully accounted for by this theory.
