The controller, also called the 'brain', is run by a computer program and gives commands for the moving parts to perform the job. The mechanical parts -- motors, pistons, grippers, wheels and gears -- are what let the robot actually move, grab, turn and lift. Sensors tell the robot about its surroundings: the sizes and shapes of nearby objects, the distances between objects, and directions.
Step 2 (Power and motion). Beyond these three, a power conversion unit supplies energy from batteries, solar power, or hydraulics; actuators convert that energy into movement, usually rotational or linear; and electric motors (AC, brushed DC, brushless DC, geared DC) actuate specific parts such as wheels, arms, fingers, legs, sensors, cameras and even weapon systems.
Step 3 (Muscle-like components). Pneumatic air muscles contract and expand -- by almost 40% -- when air is pumped in or sucked out, replicating a human muscle's action. Muscle wires, made of shape-memory alloys, contract by about 5% when an electric current passes through them. Piezo motors and ultrasonic motors are used mainly in industrial robots. …
