Cost of goods sold is the cost of the goods actually sold in the period = Opening stock + Net purchases + Direct expenses − Closing stock.

Concept. When goods are sold, sales are recorded at selling price, but to measure profit we must match against them the cost of those very goods. All goods purchased are not sold within the year — some remain as closing stock. Cost of goods sold therefore removes the unsold portion and adds the direct costs of bringing goods to a saleable condition.
