By TIME: (1) Very Short Period / Market Period — supply is fixed, so price is governed mainly by demand; (2) Short Period — supply can be changed only by varying the variable factors; (3) Long Period — supply can be fully adjusted as all factors are variable, so price depends mainly on cost of production. By AREA: (1) Local Market — perishable/bulky goods sold in a small area; (2) Regional Market — goods sold over a region; (3) National Market — goods demanded throughout the country; (4) International/World Market — goods traded across the world (e.g. gold).
Classification of Markets on the Basis of Time
Professor Alfred Marshall classified markets by time according to how far supply can adjust to a change in demand:
- Very Short Period (Market Period): the period is so short that supply is fixed and cannot be increased. Price is determined mainly by demand. Example: the market for perishable goods like fish or vegetables on a given day.
- Short Period: supply can be changed to some extent by changing only the variable factors (labour, raw material), while fixed factors remain the same. Both demand and supply influence price.
- Long Period: the period is long enough for supply to be fully adjusted because all factors, including plant and machinery, can be varied. Here price is governed mainly by the cost of production.
Classification of Markets on the Basis of Area

- Local Market: the good is bought and sold within a small local area. Perishable and bulky goods (vegetables, bricks) have local markets. …
