Currency refers to the coins and paper notes in actual circulation in a country that serve as the medium of exchange. It is legal tender money, meaning it must be accepted in settlement of debts. In India, coins are issued by the Government of India and currency notes (except the one-rupee note/coin) are issued by the Reserve Bank of India. Currency together with demand deposits of banks makes up the money supply.
