Token money is money whose face value is greater than the value of the material it is made of (its intrinsic value). Modern coins and currency notes are token money; they are accepted because the government makes them legal tender, not because of their material value.

Meaning

Token money is that form of money whose face value (the value marked on it) is higher than its intrinsic value (the market value of the metal or paper of which it is made). For instance, the metal in a five-rupee coin is worth much less than five rupees, and the paper of a hundred-rupee note is worth only a few paise.
