An Overdraft (O/D) is an arrangement under which a bank permits a current account holder to overdraw his account — i.e. withdraw more than the balance available — up to a sanctioned limit. It is a short-term credit facility. Its uses are: to meet temporary or urgent cash needs; to finance the working-capital requirements of traders and businessmen; to overcome short-term gaps between receipts and payments; and interest is charged only on the amount actually used, which makes it an economical form of short-term borrowing.

Meaning of Overdraft

An overdraft is a facility given by a bank to its current account holders by which they are allowed to withdraw more money than they have in their account, up to a pre-arranged (sanctioned) limit. The excess amount withdrawn is the overdraft.
