An Indifference Map is a collection of indifference curves shown together on a single diagram. Each curve joins combinations of two goods giving equal satisfaction, and different curves represent different levels of satisfaction. To draw it, put good X on the X-axis and good Y on the Y-axis, then draw several curves (IC1, IC2, IC3...) that slope downward and are convex to the origin; higher curves (farther from the origin) show higher satisfaction, and the curves never intersect.

What an Indifference Map Is

A single indifference curve shows all combinations of two goods that give a consumer the SAME level of satisfaction. But a consumer can enjoy many different levels of satisfaction, so there can be many indifference curves — a lower one for a lower level of satisfaction and a higher one for a higher level. When a number of such indifference curves are drawn together on one diagram, the whole family is called an Indifference Map.

How It Is Drawn (description in prose)

  1. Axes: Take the quantity of good X along the horizontal (X) axis and the quantity of good Y along the vertical (Y) axis.
  2. Draw several curves: Draw a series of indifference curves — label them IC1, IC2, IC3 and so on — one above the other. Each individual curve:
    • slopes downward from left to right (negative slope), because to keep satisfaction constant more of X means less of Y; and
    • is convex to the origin, because of the diminishing marginal rate of substitution.
  3. Ranking of curves: A curve lying farther away from the origin (say IC3) represents a HIGHER level of satisfaction than a curve nearer the origin (IC1), because it contains larger combinations of both goods. …
