No — installation means storing software permanently, which volatile RAM cannot do; without secondary storage a program can only be loaded into RAM temporarily (e.g. a live-boot OS) and disappears at power-off.

Reason from the definitions. Two facts from this chapter collide in this question:

  1. Installation = copying a software's files onto the computer permanently (and configuring it), so it is still there after a restart and can be run whenever needed. The permanent home of installed software is secondary storage — the hard disk or SSD.
  2. RAM is volatile — its contents exist only while power is on; every shutdown wipes it completely.

Put together: on a computer with RAM but no secondary storage, there is nowhere for installed files to persist. You could copy a program into RAM and it would work — until the machine is switched off, at which instant the "installed" software ceases to exist. At the next power-on the computer would hold nothing at all (even the OS would have to arrive from somewhere external). Permanent installation is therefore impossible; the machine can never retain software.

What such a machine could still do (the interesting nuance):

  • Run software without installing it. Diskless computers really exist: they boot a live operating system from a bootable pen drive/DVD or over the network, loading everything straight into RAM. Everything runs normally — but purely in memory, and every session starts from scratch. …
