Web of Things (WoT)

3.4.1

Web of Things (WoT)

The Internet of Things lets us interact with many different devices over the Internet using our smartphones or computers — in effect creating a personal network of our own things. But there is a practical catch.

The problem: one app per device

To interact with 'n' different devices, we currently need to install 'n' different apps — one for the smart bulb, another for the door lock, another for the air conditioner, and so on. Wouldn't it be far more convenient to have one single interface that connects all the devices?

The idea: use the web as that interface

The web is already a universal system through which people and services communicate with each other. So the natural question is: can the web be used in such a way that all things can communicate with each other in the most efficient manner, by integrating them together on it?

What is the Web of Things?

The Web of Things (WoT) answers yes. WoT allows the use of web services to connect anything in the physical world, alongside the human identities that already live on the web. Instead of every device speaking through its own separate app, everything becomes reachable through the common fabric of the web.

Why it matters …
