Caliper-measure the skinfold at three standard sites, average each, sum them, and convert the total to body-fat percentage.

Instrument. A skinfold caliper, which reads the thickness of a pinched fold of skin plus subcutaneous fat in millimetres.

Procedure:

  1. Select three standard sites — a common protocol is chest, abdomen and thigh for males and triceps, suprailiac and thigh for females — measured on the right side of the body.
  2. Grasp a fold of skin and underlying fat firmly between thumb and forefinger, lifting it clear of the muscle.
  3. Apply the caliper jaws about 1 cm below the fingers, release the trigger, wait 1–2 seconds, and read the thickness in millimetres.
