Fungi serve us as food, in baking/brewing and dairy industries, as antibiotics and enzymes, and as decomposers, though some cause diseases and spoilage.

Role of Fungi in our daily life:

Useful (beneficial) roles:

  1. As food: Edible mushrooms such as Agaricus (button mushroom) are a rich source of protein.
  2. Baking and brewing industry: Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is used to leaven bread and to produce alcohol/beverages by fermentation.
  3. Dairy industry: Certain fungi are used in the ripening and flavouring of cheese (e.g. Penicillium roqueforti).
  4. Antibiotics: Penicillium notatum yields penicillin, the first antibiotic; other fungi give further antibiotics.
  5. Organic acids and enzymes: Fungi are used to manufacture citric acid, and enzymes such as amylases and proteases.
  6. As decomposers/saprophytes: They decompose dead organic matter and recycle nutrients (carbon, minerals) back into the ecosystem, maintaining soil fertility.
