Prophase-I is meiosis's longest, most eventful phase, divided into 5 substages (Leptotene → Zygotene → Pachytene → Diplotene → Diakinesis) during which homologous chromosomes pair and exchange genetic material.

Prophase-I is much longer and more complex than mitotic prophase, and is divided into five substages:

  1. Leptotene: chromosomes become gradually visible under the microscope as long, thread-like structures with beadlike thickenings called chromomeres along their length; each chromosome (already duplicated) begins condensing.
  2. Zygotene: homologous chromosomes begin pairing, called synapsis. The paired homologous chromosomes are called a bivalent or tetrad (4 chromatids). A protein structure, the synaptonemal complex, forms between the pairing chromosomes.
  3. Pachytene: bivalent chromosomes now clearly show 4 chromatids arranged as tetrads. Crossing over occurs — non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material — at points called chiasmata, mediated by recombination enzymes/recombination nodules. …
