The cell organelle that contains chlorophyll pigments is the CHLOROPLAST.
Structure:
- Chloroplasts are green plastids, generally lens-shaped (discoid) and found in the mesophyll cells of leaves.
- Each chloroplast is bounded by a double membrane (outer and inner membrane) with a narrow intermembrane space.
- The inner colourless matrix is called the STROMA.
- Embedded in the stroma is a system of flattened membranous sacs called THYLAKOIDS; these are stacked one above another to form GRANA (singular: granum). Adjacent grana are connected by stroma lamellae (intergranal thylakoids).
- Chlorophyll and other photosynthetic pigments are present on the thylakoid membranes.
- The stroma contains enzymes, ribosomes (70S) and its own circular DNA.
