The banyan tree and grass are both examples in which roots arise from plant parts other than the radicle, making them adventitious roots.

Most roots trace their origin to the radicle of the germinating embryo, either directly forming a tap root system in dicots such as mustard, or being quickly replaced by numerous stem-base roots forming a fibrous root system in monocots such as wheat. A separate category exists for roots that instead originate from other parts of the plant body altogether.

  • In the banyan tree, roots grow downward from the branches of the mature tree, well away from the original radicle, eventually reaching the soil and thickening into pillar-like supports.
