Roots are modified mainly for storage, support, respiration and assimilation, beyond their normal absorption/anchorage role.

Root modification refers to the change in the shape and structure of roots from their typical form to enable them to carry out functions other than absorption of water/minerals and anchoring the plant.

Types of root modification (by function):

  1. Modification for storage of food:
    • Tap roots: become swollen with stored food — conical (carrot), fusiform (radish), napiform (turnip), tuberous (single swollen root with no definite shape, e.g. Mirabilis).
    • Adventitious roots: also modified for storage — tuberous (sweet potato), fasciculated (clusters, e.g. Asparagus, Dahlia), nodulose (Curcuma).
  2. Modification for mechanical support:
    • Prop roots: thick pillar-like roots that hang from branches to the soil for extra support, e.g. banyan (Ficus benghalensis).
    • Stilt roots: arise from the lower nodes of the stem and grow obliquely into the soil, providing extra support, e.g. maize, sugarcane.
    • Climbing roots: arise from nodes and help the plant climb a support, e.g. Pothos (money plant), betel (Piper betle).
  3. Modification for respiration: …
