Root modification is the alteration of root form to perform special functions such as storage of food, extra support, respiration, and other roles like climbing or parasitism.

Definition:

  • Root modification is the change in the shape, structure and function of a root so that it can carry out functions in addition to (or other than) its normal functions of anchorage and absorption of water and minerals.

Roots modified for different functions:

  1. Storage of food (fleshy tap roots and adventitious roots):
    • The root becomes swollen with stored food.
    • Conical - carrot; Fusiform - radish; Napiform - turnip, beet; Tuberous adventitious roots - sweet potato (Ipomoea).
  2. Mechanical support:
    • Prop (pillar) roots: hang down from branches and enter the soil to support the heavy crown, e.g. banyan (Ficus benghalensis).
    • Stilt roots: arise from the lower nodes of the stem and give extra support, e.g. maize, sugarcane, Pandanus.
  3. Respiration:
    • Pneumatophores: negatively geotropic roots that grow vertically upward out of marshy, oxygen-poor soil and have pores (pneumathodes) for gaseous exchange, e.g. mangroves such as Rhizophora and Avicennia.
  4. Other special functions:
    • Climbing roots: help the plant climb, e.g. money plant (Pothos), betel. …
