Pollination is brought about by abiotic agents (wind, water) and biotic agents (insects, birds, bats and other animals); flowers are specially adapted to their agent.

Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma. As plants are stationary, pollen must be carried by external agents. These agents are of two main types:

A. Abiotic agents:

  1. Wind (Anemophily):
  • Flowers are small, dull-coloured, without scent or nectar.

  • Pollen is produced in large amounts, and is light and dry so that it is easily blown by wind.

  • Stigmas are often large, hairy or feathery to catch the pollen; anthers are versatile.

  • Examples: grasses, maize, wheat, Cannabis.

  1. Water (Hydrophily):
  • Occurs in some aquatic plants; pollen is carried by water currents.
  • Pollen and stigma are often adapted to water (pollen may be long/ribbon-like, mucilaginous, and unwettable).
  • Examples: Vallisneria, Hydrilla, Zostera.

B. Biotic agents (animals):

  1. Insects (Entomophily) - the commonest:
  • Flowers are large or clustered, brightly coloured, scented, and secrete nectar to attract insects (bees, butterflies, moths, beetles).
  • Pollen is often sticky or spiny; the flower may have special guiding marks and mechanisms.
  1. Birds (Ornithophily):
  • Flowers are large, brightly coloured (usually red), and produce copious nectar, e.g. Bignonia, Bombax; pollinated by sunbirds, hummingbirds.
  1. Bats (Chiropterophily): …
