Natural classification uses the sum of an organism's natural affinities/characters, not a single arbitrary trait; Bentham and Hooker's system is the classic example.

Earlier "artificial" systems of classification (like Linnaeus's) grouped plants using only one or a few easily observable characters (e.g., number of stamens), which often placed unrelated plants together. The Natural system, in contrast, classifies plants based on their natural affinities — taking into account the totality of characters, both vegetative (root, stem, leaf) and reproductive (flower, fruit, seed) — so that the resulting groups reflect real, overall similarity/relatedness between organisms.
