The ionic product of water Kw = [H+][OH-]; at 298 K it equals 1.0 x 10^-14, and in pure water [H+] = [OH-] = 1.0 x 10^-7 mol/L.

Water is a very weak electrolyte and ionises to a small extent:

H2O <=> H+ + OH- (or 2H2O <=> H3O+ + OH-)

Applying the law of chemical equilibrium and treating the concentration of undissociated water as constant, the product of the ionic concentrations is itself a constant called the ionic product of water, Kw:

Kw = [H+][OH-]

At 298 K (25 degree C), experiment shows that in pure water:

[H+] = [OH-] = 1.0 x 10^-7 mol/L

Therefore Kw = (1.0 x 10^-7)(1.0 x 10^-7) = 1.0 x 10^-14 mol^2/L^2

Important points:

  • Kw depends only on temperature; it increases as temperature rises (ionisation increases). …
