Ethylene (ethene) is prepared by dehydration of ethanol or dehydrohalogenation of ethyl halide, and its C=C double bond undergoes addition reactions with both cold dilute alkaline KMnO4\text{KMnO}_4 and Br2\text{Br}_2/CCl4\text{CCl}_4.

Two methods of preparation of ethylene (CH2=CH2\text{CH}_2=\text{CH}_2):

  1. Dehydration of ethanol — ethanol is heated with excess concentrated sulphuric acid at about 443 K (acts as a dehydrating agent):

    CH3CH2OH→conc. H2SO4, 443 KCH2=CH2+H2O\text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{OH} \xrightarrow{\text{conc. } \text{H}_2\text{SO}_4,\ 443\ \text{K}} \text{CH}_2=\text{CH}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O}

  2. Dehydrohalogenation of ethyl halide — ethyl bromide (or ethyl iodide) is heated with alcoholic potassium hydroxide (KOH dissolved in ethanol); this eliminates HBr:

    CH3CH2Br+KOH (alc.)→ΔCH2=CH2+KBr+H2O\text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{Br} + \text{KOH}\,(\text{alc.}) \xrightarrow{\Delta} \text{CH}_2=\text{CH}_2 + \text{KBr} + \text{H}_2\text{O}

Reactions of ethylene:

(a) With cold, dilute, alkaline KMnO4\text{KMnO}_4 (Baeyer's reagent): this is a mild oxidation (syn-hydroxylation) that adds two -OH groups across the double bond, forming a vicinal diol (glycol), while the purple/pink colour of KMnO4\text{KMnO}_4 fades and a brown precipitate of MnO2\text{MnO}_2 forms — this decolorization is used as a chemical test (Baeyer's test) for the presence of a C=C or C≡C double/triple bond:

CH2=CH2+[O]+H2O→cold, dil., alk. KMnO4HOCH2−CH2OHethylene glycol+MnO2↓\text{CH}_2=\text{CH}_2 + [\text{O}] + \text{H}_2\text{O} \xrightarrow{\text{cold, dil., alk. KMnO}_4} \underset{\text{ethylene glycol}}{\text{HOCH}_2-\text{CH}_2\text{OH}} + \text{MnO}_2\downarrow
