Count each single bond as 1 sigma bond, each double bond as 1 sigma + 1 pi, and each triple bond as 1 sigma + 2 pi: C₂H₂ has 3σ + 2π, and C₂H₄ has 5σ + 1π.

Rule: In any covalent bond, the first bond formed between two atoms is always a sigma (σ) bond (formed by head-on/axial orbital overlap). Any additional bond(s) between the same two atoms are pi (π) bonds (formed by sideways overlap of unhybridised p-orbitals). So:

  • A single bond = 1σ
  • A double bond = 1σ + 1π
  • A triple bond = 1σ + 2π

(a) C₂H₂ (ethyne/acetylene): H–C≡C–H

Each carbon is sp hybridised.

  • 2 C–H bonds, each a single bond → 2σ
  • 1 C≡C triple bond → 1σ + 2π …
