Combining Boyle's, Charles' and Avogadro's laws gives V proportional to nT/P, which rearranges to the ideal gas equation PV = nRT.

The ideal gas equation is derived by combining three experimental gas laws.

  1. Boyle's law (at constant T and n): the volume of a fixed amount of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure.

    V is proportional to 1/P

  2. Charles' law (at constant P and n): the volume of a fixed amount of gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature.

    V is proportional to T

  3. Avogadro's law (at constant P and T): the volume of a gas is directly proportional to the number of moles.

    V is proportional to n

Combining all three:

V is proportional to (nT / P)

Removing the proportionality by introducing a constant R:

V = R (nT / P)

Rearranging:

PV = nRT
