The ideal gas equation PV = nRT is derived by combining the three empirical gas laws (Boyle's, Charles's, and Avogadro's) into a single proportionality and introducing the gas constant R.

Three empirical laws describe the behaviour of an ideal gas:

  1. Boyle's Law: at constant temperature (T) and amount (n), the volume (V) of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure (P):

    V is proportional to 1/P (at constant T, n)

  2. Charles's Law: at constant pressure (P) and amount (n), the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature (T):

    V is proportional to T (at constant P, n)

  3. Avogadro's Law: at constant temperature (T) and pressure (P), the volume of a gas is directly proportional to the number of moles (n) of gas:

    V is proportional to n (at constant T, P)

Combining all three proportionalities into a single relationship, since V depends on all three variables simultaneously:

V is proportional to nT/P

Introducing a proportionality constant R (the universal/molar gas constant) to convert this proportionality into an equation:

V = RnT/P

Rearranging:

PV = nRT
