The quantum numbers (n,l)(n, l) map directly to orbital notations: l=0l=0 is s, l=1l=1 is p, l=2l=2 is d, l=3l=3 is f. The orbital is written as the number nn followed by the letter for ll. So (a) 1s,

(b) 3p,

(c) 4d,

(d) 4f.

The notation s, p, d, f comes from early spectroscopy: sharp, principal, diffuse, fundamental. But the real physics is in the quantum numbers.

The principal quantum number nn tells you the energy level (shell) — roughly, how far the electron is from the nucleus. The azimuthal quantum number ll tells you the shape of the orbital (subshell). For a given nn, ll can be 0,1,2,…,n−10, 1, 2, \dots, n-1.

The mapping is fixed:

  • l=0→l = 0 \rightarrow s orbital (spherical)
  • l=1→l = 1 \rightarrow p orbital (dumbbell)
  • l=2→l = 2 \rightarrow d orbital (cloverleaf)
  • l=3→l = 3 \rightarrow f orbital (complex)

Orbital notation=n (letter for l)\text{Orbital notation} = n \, \text{(letter for } l\text{)}

Now apply it to each case.

  1. (a) n=1n=1, l=0l=0

    l=0l=0 means s. So the orbital is 1s.

    This is the lowest-energy orbital in any atom — the only one in the first shell.

  2. (b) n=3n=3, l=1l=1

    l=1l=1 means p. So the orbital is 3p.

    The third shell has three subshells: 3s, 3p, 3d. Here we are in the p-subshell.

  3. (c) n=4n=4, l=2l=2

    l=2l=2 means d. So the orbital is 4d. …
