Uses of Carbon
- Graphite fibres embedded in plastic give high-strength, lightweight composites used in tennis rackets, fishing rods, aircraft parts and canoes.
- Because it conducts electricity, graphite is used to make electrodes for batteries and industrial electrolysis; graphite crucibles, being inert to dilute acids and alkalis, are used to melt/handle reactive materials.
- Activated charcoal, being highly porous, adsorbs poisonous gases, is used in water filters to remove organic contaminants, and in air-conditioning systems to control odour.
- Carbon black is used as the black pigment in ink and as a reinforcing filler in automobile tyres. …
