If aluminium atoms replace some of the silicon atoms within the three-dimensional SiO2SiO_2 network, the resulting framework is called an aluminosilicate. Because aluminium contributes one fewer positive charge than silicon, this substitution leaves the framework with an overall negative charge, which is balanced by cations such as Na+Na^+, K+K^+ or Ca2+Ca^{2+}.
