Reason for the difference in vigour:
- Melting point: Lithium has a much higher melting point (~453 K) than sodium (~371 K). The heat evolved during the reaction with water is not sufficient to melt lithium, so it remains a solid piece and reacts in a slow, controlled manner. Sodium's low melting point means the heat of reaction melts it into a small molten ball that darts around the water surface, greatly increasing the effective surface area of contact and making the reaction fast and often violent enough to ignite the hydrogen produced. …
