Burning magnesium in air produces a brilliant white light and reacts with both oxygen and nitrogen present in air.

When magnesium ribbon is ignited in air, it burns with a characteristic dazzling white flame (this is why magnesium is used in flash photography, flares, and fireworks).

It reacts with the oxygen of air to form magnesium oxide (a white ash/powder):

2Mg(s)+O2(g)→2MgO(s)2\text{Mg}(s) + \text{O}_2(g) \rightarrow 2\text{MgO}(s)

Because magnesium is reactive enough, it also combines directly with the nitrogen present in air (about 78%) to form magnesium nitride:

3Mg(s)+N2(g)→Mg3N2(s)3\text{Mg}(s) + \text{N}_2(g) \rightarrow \text{Mg}_3\text{N}_2(s)
