Plaster of Paris (POP) is calcium sulphate hemihydrate, CaSO4·½H2O, made by heating gypsum.

Chemical name: Calcium sulphate hemihydrate.

Formula: CaSO4⋅12H2OCaSO_4\cdot\tfrac{1}{2}H_2O (equivalently written 2CaSO4⋅H2O2CaSO_4\cdot H_2O).

Preparation: It is obtained by heating gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) to about 393 K (120°C):

2(CaSO4⋅2H2O)→393 K2CaSO4⋅H2O+3H2O2(CaSO_4\cdot 2H_2O) \xrightarrow{393\,K} 2CaSO_4\cdot H_2O + 3H_2O

On heating beyond 393 K, all the water of crystallisation is lost and 'dead burnt plaster' (anhydrous CaSO4) is formed, which does not set with water.
