Plaster of Paris (CaSO4.1/2H2O) sets to a hard solid with water, so it is used in surgical casts, moulds, statues, dentistry and for smoothing walls.

Plaster of Paris is calcium sulphate hemihydrate, CaSO4.(1/2)H2O, made by heating gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) to about 393 K:

2 CaSO4.2H2O -> 2 CaSO4.(1/2)H2O + 3 H2O

When mixed with a little water, it sets into a hard, solid mass of gypsum again (with a slight expansion), which is why it is so useful.
