Because enthalpy is a state function, the overall enthalpy change of a reaction is independent of the path/number of steps taken.

Statement (Hess's Law of Constant Heat Summation): If a reaction takes place in several steps, the standard enthalpy change of the overall reaction is equal to the sum of the standard enthalpy changes of the individual steps, i.e., the total enthalpy change is the same regardless of the path by which the reaction is carried out (single step or multiple steps).

Basis: This follows directly from the fact that enthalpy (HH) is a state function — its value depends only on the initial and final states of the system, not on the path taken to get there.

Example: Carbon can be converted to CO2\text{CO}_2 either directly, or via CO in two steps:

Direct path: C(s)+O2(g)→CO2(g)\text{C}(s) + \text{O}_2(g) \rightarrow \text{CO}_2(g), ΔH=ΔH1\Delta H = \Delta H_1

Two-step path:

C(s)+12O2(g)→CO(g)\text{C}(s) + \tfrac{1}{2}\text{O}_2(g) \rightarrow \text{CO}(g), ΔH2\Delta H_2 …
